The Matter of Quizzes

I really don't want to sound kind of bipolar, but the truth is that, today, I have big wonderful happy news! (remember last Monday?).

Monday was still a bit blah, a long busy day on UnB, no time for lunch... However, it was all good. In In the first class on this day, the Writing 3 class, I had a couple of good news.

The Marvelous Seven
First, I didn't flunk the test! Can you believe it? Even with my superpowers of misunderstanding, I got a 7! I won't even think that it could have been a 9, because, hello!, it also could have been a 5 or a 4... or even less. So, I was happy and relieved, and the day got better (after a difficult one hour earlier in the morning trying to start my computer for nothing). Yes, I know I'm sounding an old grump, but, believe me, the days haven't been easy. I'm still standing, though, with my beautiful 7 on the quiz :)

The other good news... well, it will come later, on another post - it is worth the wait, I promise.

For now, I'll keep the quiz matter talking a little bit about what was and what will be.

The last quiz (The Marvelous 7) was about collocations, not an easy subject, as told us Thiago while correcting the test. It is not about clear rules, but about established use of combined terms, what asks for a more comprehensive contact with the language. Reading is a good way to get more familiar with such uses, but, even so, the subject is not easy. I'd have never studied before, and, as I've said here before, I really enjoy learning new subjects on English, as my knowledge of the language is sort of sketchy.

The thing is, after studying it on this class, I'll certainly pain more attention on how words are combined, on the current and frequent uses of such combinations.

After correcting the test, we started the subject for the next quiz, Inversions - another one that I haven't studied before. It is easier than collocation, but it demands our attention. It is easier, but not easy - or is it just my lack of learning skills?

After the explanation, it was practice time, when the subject became clearer. If you never heard about it or is curious about Inversions, here some exercises suggested by Thiago.

I'll meet you soon on another post - remember the great news? It will be here in a not too far future :)

Stay tuned!

PS:After leaving the class, I did something that I haven't done for such a long time, I'm not even sure how long. I went to the university's library. The thing is, I love libraries, but I'm a bit allergic to old books (it is a shame, I know). For me, there's nothing like the smell of a new book. I'd like to be like the characters in a cute movie, so in love with old books... but no. That's why I rarely go to UnB's library. I had a nice surprise today, though, when I saw how modernized it is, with comfortable chairs, new tables, a clearer space (still dusty, but more livable). Through big windows, it was possible to see the rain, always a nice scenario in such the a desert as Brasilia. I didn't take a picture of it today (I looked for one on the Internet), but the thing I most love about UnB's library is the steps on the entrance hall: they look like book spines, so beautiful.

To be continued...

So, this is The End, my friends... Or maybe just not :) Writing the final post on what started as a activity for a class, I realize how ...
